12/3/2004 Learning new domainsI never thought in my dreams that I would be working in the medical arena. My earlier instint and somewhat subtle hate for biology endeared me to engineering and later on computers, but biology; a strict no-no. But fate had its own story to tell. Imagine the surprise met out to me, when I was asked by my BDO (Business Development Officer) that I was to be on an onsite assignment for a company which specialized in bio-medical devices, namely, the pacemaker...... Now that the joke had been played on me, I had to accept and carry on. So, what better than to refresh those biology concepts which I mugged during my board exams. But my learning mind has better ideas. I suggested (and my mentor accepted) that it would be better if I gathered some domain knowledge so that my test development task wouldn't be a mundane one, but one which was thrilling. I am part of the Diagnostics group. Diagnostics means the information which is used by cardiologists to decifer the condition of the patient. This information is stored by the Pacemaker (image uploaded) during the lifetime of the patient. Whenever the patient visits the doctor, he checks out the readings stored in the pacemaker. These readings are an indicator of how the heart condition was. Based on these settings, the doctor can re-adjust the settings of the pacemaker so that the patient feels better. That's it for now. Shall be posting more about medical domain soon. |
